Prior to forming Better City, Mr. Godfrey was the Mayor of Ogden, Utah. When he was elected at the age of 29, he was the youngest person in the State’s history to ever be elected Mayor over a major city. During his twelve years in office, the City recruited over $1.2 billion of investment, added almost 1 million square feet of new office space, revitalized over 130 acres of the downtown, and reduced crime by 33%.
Mr. Godfrey lead efforts to recruit over 6,000 jobs and changed Ogden from an old railroad town in decline to the global capital of outdoor recreation. In his last year in office, they led the country in job growth and is ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the top 10 cities to raise a family.
Mr. Godfrey holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business from Weber State University where he also ran track and field and was an NCAA All-American. Matthew and his wife, Monica, have five children and live in Ogden.
